In addition to directing a trilogy, Gareth Edwards will return to write and produce the sequel. Edwards quit the project in May 2016. A new script was commissioned in October 2016 by Dougherty and Shields. Dougherty became the director in January 2017. Principal photography started in June 2017 and ended in September 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia Exec producer Yoshimitsu Banno (Godzilla vs. Hedorah) and original Godzilla suit actor Haruo Nakajima died in 2017.

To be fair, reviewers praised the visual effects, action scenes, cinematography, and musical soundtrack of Godzilla: King of Monsters. The picture grossed $386 million worldwide, despite a production expenditure of $170–200 million and marketing expenses of $100–150 million. Godzilla vs. Kong came out on March 24, 2021.

Paleobiologist Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison, who work for the Titan-studying group Monarch five years after the existence of the "Titans" was made public, witness the hatching of a larva dubbed Mothra. This is done by employing the "Orca," gadget, which emits frequencies that entice or change Titan behavior. Emma and Madison are kidnapped by a squad of eco-terrorists commanded by former British Army Colonel Alan Jonah. Mothra escapes and pupates beneath a neighboring waterfall at the same time.

Monarch and the rest of the squad lure Rodan to Monster Zero in Mexico by waking him up in the jungle. Following the destruction of Rodan, Godzilla ambushes Monster Zero and severs his left hemisphere. It seems that the "Oxygen Destroyer," a prototype weapon developed by the US Navy, killed Godzilla during the battle. Regrowing his head and waking up the rest of the Titans, Monster Zero is unfazed by the loss of his own. This causes Madison to break up with Emma.

King Ghidorah is an ancient extraterrestrial that seeks to alter Earth, according to mythical writings. To contact Godzilla, Mothra exits from her cocoon and fly to Monarch's Bermuda headquarters. Finding Godzilla's hideout in a radioactive submarine. A nuclear weapon is used to speed up Godzilla's recovery. The warhead is manually detonated, resurrecting Godzilla and boosting his strength.

Jonah dismisses Emma's efforts to stop Ghidorah and the other Titans from destroying the Earth. Madison overhears and takes the Orca. When Madison arrives at Fenway Park, she unintentionally transmits a frequency that soothes the Titans. Ghidorah destroys the Orca in Boston. Godzilla arrives to fight him with help from Monarch. Because Godzilla's radiation levels are rising, Mark organizes a team to rescue Madison and flee the city before it's too late. To rescue Godzilla, Mothra comes, but is caught by Rodan. She beats him, but is damaged.

Despite Ghidorah's overwhelming might, Mothra sacrifices herself and gives her power to Godzilla, preventing him from being killed. It is revealed that the Orca is reactivated and used to lure Ghidorah from Godzilla. Emma sacrifices herself so that Mark, Madison, and the rest of the Monarch crew may get away from Ghidorah. Reborn Godzilla beats Ghidorah in an all-out battle. The Titans, led by Rodan, assemble before Godzilla and submit to his will and authority.

Even before Edwards' decision to return for the sequel, Aaron Taylor-Johnson said that his involvement was dependent on whether or not he would repeat his part. A Godzilla vs. Kong film, slated for release in 2020, was first reported by Legendary Pictures in October 2015. King Kong, Godzilla, and other huge super-species will be part of a common cinematic universe that Legendary is developing "centered around Monarch."

needed to get on with things Edwards said he would like to work on Godzilla again at some point.

When Godzilla 2 came out in 2016, it was announced that Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields, both of whom worked on Krampus, would write the screenplay for it. A day after that, it was said that Dougherty was also in talks to direct Godzilla 2. Production for both Pacific Rim: Uprising and Legendary announced that it would also be taking place at parent company Wanda's Qingdao Movie Metropolis in Qingdao, China, at the same time. This is where production will also happen. Legendary said in December 2016 that the official title for Godzilla 2 would be Godzilla: King of the Monsters. This is what the movie will be called.

Including Monarch, Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah was Legendary's sole mission. Dougherty and his crew "started over from scratch" when they wrote the screenplay for the film. A rudimentary two-page outline with the story's core rhythms and crude drawings of the characters was Dougherty's starting point. Dougherty and co-writer/executive producer Zach Shields, together with Borenstein, formed a writer's room, which was overseen by Dougherty and Shields. The therapy was built upon by ten authors. After a year of work, the screenplay was finally ready for production.

Dougherty also changed, revised, and improved lines while filming and after the movie was done. He thought the hardest part of writing the script was figuring out how to show off the monsters "while still creating a story with human characters that we care about." Monarch was in the background of Ford's previous movie. Dougherty wanted the movie to be about Monarch, because he thought there was a way to make the group of heroes. Due to this, the movie became a group movie. This is why.

Mark and Sam were initially described as long-time friends in the original screenplay, but their relationship was later changed. In subsequent versions, this was changed from Sam to Serizawa so that Mark's driving force would be Serizawa. "humanity's inability to not interfere." is shown by the Oxygen Destroyer, which Dougherty included in the design. Dougherty and Shields made the decision to kill Godzilla in the middle of the film since this is something that has never been done before in Godzilla films.

It would be great if Dougherty could get "God in Godzilla" back for Godzilla. They came up with a design that he liked, but he wanted to make it better by adding the 1954 version's dorsal plates and making its claws and feet bigger so it looked like a more powerful predator. In order to make Godzilla's roar sound more like that of the 1954 version, the director asked the sound design team to make it sound more like the roars from that movie "It looks like they did a good job with the roar of Godzilla in the first movie. In order to make it even more like the original (1954) version, I pushed them a little bit further, but not too far."

To make Rodan appear like he might live inside a volcano, volcanic rock was added to the scales and skin color. A "Mother Nature could have created." design was Dougherty's goal for Rodan. Because birds are related to dinosaurs, the designers were instructed to look at vultures, eagles, and hawks as well as Pteranodons. "A bit of a rogue...you never quite know where his allegiance lie," Dougherty said of Rodan. " Rodan is a "massive A-bomb" with "speed and ferocity." said the director. Rodan was designed by Tom Woodruff Jr. of Amalgamated Dynamics. The Rodan pursuit scene was the initial pre-viz proposal to Legendary.

The "scary" and "predatory" moth species were found by Dougherty. He intended to keep a feeling of realism with Mothra, explaining, "...the approach for Mothra is to create an insectoid, huge creature that looks believable from every angle, and especially in motion." The filmmaker thought Mothra the most challenging Titan to create because he sought to avoid having Mothra appear like a blown-up moth. Legacy Effects contributed the design for Mothra.

Dougherty revealed that the film will contain original, non-Toho creatures. On the other hand, the non-Toho Titans were revealed to be Baphomet and Mokele-Mbembe. Dougherty produced new monsters in the "Toho tradition" of expanding the Godzilla pantheon. Dougherty had initially wanted for Legendary to gain more Toho monsters like as Anguirus, Biollante, and Gigan. However, the film's budget precluded them from recruiting further Toho characters.

getting the noises right. was a priority for the filmmaker. A "super cut" of the monster screams from the Shwa Godzilla flicks was given to the sound designers to begin with. According to him, he said that the monsters will sound like the originals, but with new screams. In situations in which performers had to flee or respond to creatures, Dougherty had the Shwa roars played via a big speaker system he put up on location.

Toho released numerous versions of the film on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD in Japan on December 18, 2019, which featured retail exclusives from Amazon, the Godzilla Store, and Tsutaya. Four-disc limited edition set from Toho also includes the 4K Blu-ray, DVD, DVD+Bonus Features Blu-ray and a S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla figurine. In addition to the four-disc set's Godzilla Store exclusive, a limited edition Movie Monster Series figurine of the film's rendition of Burning Godzilla was included. The retail exclusives comprised a limited number of clear files that were only available to customers. HBO will premiere the film in January 2020.

Released May 31, 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was made by Warner Bros. Pictures except in Japan, where it was made by Toho and distributed by them. It was made in IMAx, 3D and other formats. The movie was supposed to come out on June 8, 2018. Then, in May 2016, it was moved again, this time to March 22, 2019, and then again to the date it is now.

When the movie starts, it's in 2014. Andrew Russell, the Russell family's oldest son, died in the deadly battle that took place there. Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler) and Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) have lost their young daughter Madison, but they are still holding on to their oldest son, Andrew (Lexi Rabe). Look up: Emma can't help but notice Godzilla. He was somewhere after he had a fight with the MUTOS.

Emma is a paleobiologist for Monarch and lives with Madison in the present (now played by Millie Bobby Brown). She has been developing on a gadget called The Orca, which can produce frequencies utilized for interacting with Titans. Mark still attempts to keep touch with them for Madison’s sake. Emma and Madison subsequently head to an underground facility in China where other scientists are watching the development of Mothra.

A group of soldiers approaches her with rifles drawn, and she responds angrily by blasting them with webbing as they stand over her. In her haste to activate the Orca, Emma succeeds in tuning into a frequency that Mothra can hear, calming the agitated creature. Madison can even go close enough to touch her. A crew of eco-terrorists lead by Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) storms in and kills the remaining scientists before kidnapping Emma and Madison. Finally, Mothra is free.

In the aftermath, Monarch gets in touch with Emma, who is willing to help Jonah and the Titans get free. When they think about it, the Titans are the planet's rightful rulers, and they might be able to bring balance back to the world that man has messed up. The way Mark sees it, she did this in retaliation for Andrew's death.

Emma and Jonah fly to Mexico to rescue another Titan. The city begins to be evacuated as a result of the disaster. They make their way to an active volcano to release Rodan, “the Fire Demon”. In the midst of Monarch's squadron of fighter pilots, he emerges. Some of the pilots are devoured by the winged beast, but they are no match for it, as he barrel-rolls through the air and finishes the rest.

Ghidorah travels to the volcano's summit to regrow his head. His cry wakes the rest of the Titans. In reaction, the Titans wreak havoc and ruin on their territories, killing countless people. Rodan even bows to Ghidorah's leadership since, as Monarch points out, Ghidorah has established himself as the Titans' alpha.

Mothra emerges from her cocoon beneath a waterfall, flying for Godzilla, who is still alive but weakened and healing underwater. Monarch finds them as Mothra talks to Godzilla. The crew concludes Mothra is the monster queen, thus she and Godzilla “have a thing”. Ilene also points out that Ghidorah was a feared Titan who would challenge Godzilla for supremacy.

Mark, Serizawa, Ilene, and Coleman proceed to Godzilla's location in an effort to awaken him, however it is revealed that his recovery process might take years to properly bring him back to his feet. Scientists have discovered that, since radiation-loving titans like Godzilla feed on it, they can use a nuclear weapon to speed up Godzilla's recovery time. However, the sub's weapons systems have been severely damaged, so Serizawa decides to carry the nuke down there alone and detonate it himself.. He says goodbye to his coworkers and heads for Godzilla, the closest he's ever been near the mighty creature. A barely awake Godzilla is petted by the man before he detonates the nuclear weapon and sacrifices himself. Big G's atomic breath is fired into the sky soon, and he emerges even more strong than ever.

That her initial plan went awry, and that the Titans are taking them to even more tragedy, had finally dawned on Emma by now. As a result, Madison has branded her mother a "monster." As Fenway Park and the rest of Boston have been evacuated, Emma informs Jonah that they can transmit a frequency via the Orca, but Jonah looks away. When Madison takes the Orca and proceeds to Fenway Park, she emits a frequency powerful enough to draw the Titans there. It's Godzilla vs. Ghidorah's last clash throughout the metropolis as Madison flees for her life in the shadows.

For this conflict, mankind is as much a part of it as the Titans are, Mark explains to the Monarch crew. They can also see that Godzilla is about to go off with a tremendous nuclear pulse. During Mark's search for Madison, they come across Emma, who has fled to the city to avoid being captured by Jonah. They locate Madison behind the ruins of their former house, unconscious but alive, after determining that she had gone there.

A rematch between Godzilla and Ghidorah ensues, with the three heads gnawing on Godzilla's flanks. Mothra swoops down to rescue Godzilla by encasing the three heads in a web of light from the sky. He reappears and fights Mothra, almost claiming her life until she outwits him and uses her stinger to puncture his shoulder and kill him. Mothra joins Godzilla's side after Ghidorah has crippled him. Despite her best efforts, she is unable to reach Ghidorah before the monster's lightning vaporizes her and replenishes Godzilla's energy.

The other Titans will soon arrive in Boston. Even Rodan submits to Godzilla. Mark, Madison, and Monarch are stunned. Godzilla then lets out a victorious roar.

Eco-terrorist Alan Jonah and his squad abduct Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison to awaken King Ghidorah using a gadget Emma built called The Orca that transmits frequencies used to communicate with Titans, some years after Godzilla's appearance in San Francisco. Emma uses the Orca to tame a newly-hatched Mothra, and Jonah sees its capabilities.

A team of Monarch scientists and troops led by Emma's estranged husband Mark has formed to stop Jonah from achieving what he wants; however, the squad arrives too late to stop Emma from freeing Ghidorah. In their first encounter, the monster goes on the attack and defeats Godzilla. Mark learns from Emma that she has been working with Jonah to unleash the Titans on the Earth in order to restore balance to the planet.. Before battling and ultimately succumbing to Ghidorah, he murders a whole squadron of troops after rescuing Rodan from his volcano. Afterwards, the three-headed dragon asserts his authority, inspiring the other Titans to rise and wreak devastation.

Godzilla is going to face Kong in the credits after finding a Mothra egg. But Jonah is handed Ghidorah's head to experiment with.
